What fictional character do you relate to most and why?
To be honest I think that which character I relate to most is entirely changeable and dependant on what's going on in my life and my mood at the time. Also I guess the beauty of fiction is that you often get to see the world from someone else's perspective and be privy to someone's inner feelings and opinions. In that way you empathise with a character you might not actually have all that much in common to, you "relate" with what they're going through at times without necessarily having experienced it yourself.
That in mind, there isn't one character I've related most to. But characters I've related to over the years have included:
Nick from The Great Gatsby:
The way in which Nick was appalled by the shallow, hollow nature of his society and the selfish, irresponsible nature of his acquintances at the end of the novel mirrors how I think we have all thought about the world at some stage, in some moment of madness or after witnessing or being party to some thoughtless deed, or even during some moment of clarity surrounded by pumping music and shallow materialism at the mall.
Marie Antionette from Sophia Coppolla's film:
The feeling of being trapped by a society based the external is one many experience. Also the way in which Marie really has no control and little real meaning in her life was sympathetic, for much of the film she really is little more than a show pony.
What is the best beer on planet Earth?
Submitted by Remmy Van Hornie.
While this isn't a specific brand of beer this is the way to get the best tasting beer ever!
- You get a mexican beer, the kind you put a lemon or a lime in like a Corona and you get a whole jalapeno.
- Take the jalapeno and cut little slits running along the side while still keeping it whole.
- Put the jalapeno into the beer bottle neck and push it down into the beer (it has to be a smallish jalapeno for this to work).
I love doing this it's so tasty. Maybe it's a bit more of a standard thing in other countries. When I was working at Lone Star (texan steakhouse, in Australia) some customers asked for it and I just couldn't wait to try it myself. The next time I was in a mexican restaurant I asked for them to do it for me and they looked at me like I was crazy but were really keen to know whether it was good or not :)
What shows are you looking forward to in the new fall TV season?
It's not fall here, it's Spring but there are a few new series on I'm looking forward to. They're all Australian though so it's likely most of you guys haven't heard of them.
The Chaser's War on Everything
The third series of this hilarious show started up last week, but unfortunately I missed it accidentally. These guys were in the news recently for pretending to be in a Canadian motorcade in the area of Sydney locked down for APEC. They were in three limos decked out in Canadian government flags and got past two checkpoints to end up right outside Bush's hotel. A security system costing billions of dollars was thwarted by a well-known group of comedians, one of whom was dressed up like Osama Bin Laden. Apparently they hadn't planned on getting through that far, were quite surprised when they did and then incredibly worried someone would accidentally shoot them. Here's a new bulletin on it:
And here's a segment from the show:
There's actually an American version being made of this satirical look at surburbia, but here's a promo from The Australian series that has just come back on our screens.
Summer Heights High
New series where this male comedian plays all the male roles including a female private girls high school student
TV, books, movies: Who's your favorite fictional father?
Off the top of my head I think my favourite dad would have to be the dad in Special Topics in Calamity Physics. While I'm not sure I would want him for my dad (a little too unreliable and condescending for me) he was a cool character.
Another cool father is Tim from Home Improvement.
What modern book do you think will be read in high school by the next generation of kids?
Submitted by Tom.
I don't know... except for the choices teachers have for the two books read in the final year of high school and a very large helping of Shakespeare Australian High Schools are quite populist/young adult in their approach to reading. For instance; Lockie Lenord and The Mandrake were two books I remember reading. I would say the approach will remain pretty much the same, challenging the students with Shakespeare but then underestimating them with young adult fiction.
Even in my final year of high school in my extension english subject our focus for the year was crime fiction, which lead me to the great "The Real Inspector Hound" but for the most part involved reading pretty standard genre fiction and watching old film noir movies.
I'd say the books read, except for those in year 11 and 12 will depend on the certain teacher's tastes, beliefs in their students reading abilities and dedication.

If you could pick a cartoon world to live in, which would it be? Why?
Submitted by Scio, Scio.
I have to pick Sailor Moon, hands down. It was my favourite cartoon show as a kid and probably still is. When I was younger I used to daydream about being the Moon Princess hidden away on planet earth as a normal, dorky girl and that one day I'd discover my true powers and the handsome Darien would wisk me away.
I wish I could get my hands on a copy of this show on dvd, it's not available in Australia and I've only seen the first couple of seasons, I would love to see some of the later ones. Apparently it's much more adult in Japan with homosexuality and nudity and stuff.
Share a story about your sibling(s) or a family member from when you were a kid.

Lol ok this is going to make me sound like a really mean bully of a child (which I so wasn't). According to my mum when we were little my younger sister, who is two and a half years younger than I, used to always draw in black and brown. Thinking this was odd, and perhaps even had some kind of psychological significance (what little girl likes to draw with black and brown) she asked Anthea why she never used colours. Anthea replied because black and brown are the only crayons Dee Dee (she couldn't say my name properly) will let me use.
I of course don't remember this so I can't attest to it being true :P
