Well my Christmas was great. I got to see lots of family members I haven't seen in awhile which was nice, I got to see both sides of my family as well as Phil's family in the one day which was quite an achievement. Phil got me some lovely expensive perfume too I feel so spoilt.
The weird thing was, in parts of Australia it was snowing. This might not seem weird to non-Australians who are used to having a white christmas, or knowing that somewhere in some part of their country people are having a white christmas, but in Australia it's just bizzare. We get snow here in the middle of winter. Sometimes only just. It never snows where I live though. Most people spend their Christmas in 40 degree heat, many make it a day at the beach.
My Parents have offered to pay for a return ticket to Japan for my 21st Birthday next year instead of having a party. I have relatives over there now so I wouldn't have to pay for accomodation in Tokyo. If I have enough money I might go to a couple of other cities though. I'm excited! I've never been overseas before!
Some of my favourite quotes included:
"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastical future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms further... And one fine morning –
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mass they had made."
" 'Her voice is full of money,' he said suddenly.
That was it. I'd never understood it before. It was full of money – that was the inexhaustable charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals' song of it...
High in a white palace the king's daughter, the golden girl..."
"Through this twilight universe Daisy began to move again with the season." I also thought the choice of Daisy's name was interesting, a beautiful flower, but transient and impossible to hold captive for very long. This quote highlights this, and shows how variable and inconstant she is, she changes with the seasons.
"The Great Gatsby" By F. Scott Fitzgerald
I'm about 50 pages in at the moment and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's beautifully written and you really get a feel for the hollowness of the characters and their society. Everyone in the book, even Nick, seems like nothing but a beautiful shell with no substance.
